How to Cook Rice (밥)

Category: Korean Home Cooking🕒 60 mins🍽️ 3 servings

Yes, the basics of Korean food are rice, side dishes, and soup. A typical Korean meal includes rice with a variety of side dishes (such as kimchi, seaweed, rolled eggs, or seasoned vegetables) served with soup.

After living in Germany, I’ve realized that German meals are also often accompanied by salads and side dishes, so in a way, they’re quite similar. The key difference is that in Korean cuisine, rice (made from grains of rice) is the staple food, whereas bread (made from flour) is common in German meals.

For Koreans, cooking rice is made incredibly easy with electric rice cookers, which are found in almost every home. While the size, features, and price may vary slightly, most Korean households own at least one. The most popular brands are Cuckoo and Cuchen, and it’s hard to choose between the two because they’re both excellent.

Another method Koreans love is cooking rice using a pressure cooker, and one of the most popular brands in Korea is Fissler, a well-known German pot manufacturer. Rice cooked this way is incredibly tasty, though I personally find pressure cookers intimidating and only enjoy rice cooked this way when someone else makes it.

The simplest method, however, is to cook rice in a pot. Since most households in Germany likely don’t own a Korean rice cooker, I’ll explain how to cook rice using a pot today. This method is great for making rice to accompany dishes like kimbap or soup.

Instructions

  1. Measure the rice

: Prepare the amount of rice you need. For example, for 3 servings, measure 3 cups of rice.

  2. Wash the rice

: Place the rice in a large bowl, fill it with water, and gently swish it around with your hands. Drain the water and repeat this process about three times until the water runs almost clear.

  3. Soak the rice

: Transfer the washed rice to a pot and add an equal amount of water (e.g., 3 cups of rice = 3 cups of water). Let the rice soak for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Cook the rice:

    • Turn the heat to high without the lid. Once the water starts boiling, stir the rice with a spatula to mix it evenly.

    • Lower the heat to medium, cover the pot with a lid, and set a timer for 10 minutes.

    • After 10 minutes, reduce the heat to low and set the timer for 5 minutes.

  5. Rest the rice

: After 5 minutes, turn off the heat completely and let the rice sit (steam) for another 10 minutes with the lid on.

  6. Fluff the rice

: Open the lid and fluff the rice with a spatula to evenly distribute the moisture.

Your delicious rice is ready to serve!
